The main Moy channel between Ballina and Cloongee/Ballylahan is divided among at least a dozen separate owners/operators. Some of the water, mainly around Ballina, Foxford and Cloongee is suitable for fly fishing but generally these stretches are fished with bait, spinner and bubble & fly. Most fisheries have a limit on the number of rods let, but all will issue daily, and some, weekly permits. Prices vary considerably depending on location and time of year; further details of tariffs and availability can be sought from the fisheries owners/managers.
The various sections in this stretch are divided as follows:
This association water is managed under licence from the state and from the Verscoyle family. It comprises approximately 3 miles of double bank fishing from the weir in Ballina to the confluence with the Corroy river. There are some newly developed pools in the Ballina area which are suitable for fly fishing. The remaining 2 ½ miles consists mainly of deep, slow flowing water and is suitable for angling with bait and spinner, although the bubble and fly method can also be very effective here. Catches on this stretch are estimated at approximately 1,000 –2,000 Salmon per season. Seatrout are also regularly caught in this stretch. The number of rods is not limited and permits are available at a very reasonable price from local tackle shops and from the following outlets.

This is one of the best known and most prestigious of the fisheries in this stretch. Mount Falcon Salmon Fishery consists of 2 miles of double fishing on the lower Moy approximately 3 miles above the tide. The fishing is for the exclusive use of the guests of Mount Falcon, either staying in one of the lodges within the estate or in the hotel itself. The fishery is divided into two one-mile beats. Each beat is limited to 6 anglers. The upper beat contains the famous Wall Pool, which offers great fly-fishing when river conditions are right. The Wall Pool Straight and Connor’s Gap also lend themselves to fly-fishing.As the pools on the lower Beat are generally slower and deeper than those on the Upper Beat they are best suited to spinning and bait fishing. Notable pools on this stretch Include The Dug-out and Cunninghams, which consistently produces large numbers of fish to the worm and spinner throughout the season.Mount Falcon carries a full range of rental equipment including rods, reels and waders. If required and given advanced notice dedicated guest ghillies can be arranged.
Peak Seasons:
Spring Salmon – April/May/Early June
Grilse – June-September

This is a section of single bank fishery approximately 1 ½ miles in length. It consists largely of slow bait and spinning water but in low water the fly works well around Morans rocks and further downstream at the two bends. This is quite a productive fishery, with an average annual catch in the region of 700 – 800 fish annually and day tickets are available at a reasonable price. Access is gained from the main Foxford – Ballina road and care should be taken when parking.

This fishery extends for about 400m downstream from the Eel weir in Foxford. It has a high gradient and formerly was not noted as Salmon holding water. However, following major development works carried out by the owner in the summer of 1999 this beat now has 2 delightful Salmon angling pools suitable for fly-fishing, both for spring Salmon and grilse.

The Board has introduced restructured tariff arrangements for the Cloongee Fishery in response to anglers who wish to fish Cloongee for a number of days.
Under the new arrangements, a one day permit is available on Beat 1 for €50 with a half day costing €30. However, the permit charge reduces for subsequent days fished with two days available for €90, three days for €120 and five days for €150 which is equivalent to just €30 per day.
On Beat 2, the daily charge is €40 with a half day available at €25. However, an angler can fish two days for €70, three days for €90 and five days for €125 which works out at just €25 per day.
A Board spokesman said new arrangements, which represent excellent value for money, are aimed at encouraging anglers to stay in the area for a number of days thus providing a boost to local tourism.
This is a prolific Salmon and grilse fishery comprising 2 miles of right bank and approximately 1 mile of left bank, including a stretch of the Cross R. which flows out of Lough Cullin. The famous Joinings pool is located here and is one of the most productive Salmon pools on the Moy. Much of the fishery is suitable for fly fishing, particularly at the upper end. There is no limit to the number of rods allowed and tickets are available on a daily basis only.
